The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Passat ( information of the previous model) is on sale in Spain from the end of December 2014. This generation of the Passat is built on the modular platform MQB (the same one that is used, for example, in Golf) and is up to 85 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The body of the sedan measures 4767 millimeters in length, 1832 mm in width and 1456 mm in height (the Passat Variant is 1 mm shorter). It is 2 mm shorter, 12 mm wider and 14 mm lower than the previous Passat Saloon. The wheelbase is 2791 mm (79 mm more). In order to reduce consumption, it has a system that disconnects two cylinders when the torque request is low ( more information about this system ). That is, it is activated when the pressure on the accelerator pedal is slight (or null) and, in addition, it rotates at less than 3000 rpm (we have not been activated above that speed). It is practically impossible to detect when it happens to work from four to half cylinders and vice versa, you do not notice a jerk or a change of sound, but you can know because the screen of the instrument panel warns of them.

Whether due to this system, due to the (apparent) little resistance to the advance of this version of the Passat (it slows down if it stops accelerating on the flat) or the engine itself, the consumption of the Passat 1.4 TSI is low, especially when traveling at a more or less constant speed, without major changes of pace. In our comparative route by highway (which has a distance of 143.3 kilometers with large slopes and where we seek to reach a real average speed of 120 km / h) has spent 6.5 l / 100 km, practically the same as a Mazda6 SKYACTIVE -G 2.0 of 145 HP and less than a Peugeot 508 SW 1.6 THP 156 hp (7.1 l / 100 km), a Mercedes-Benz C 180 of 156 hp (7.2 l / 100 km) and a Ford MondeoSportbreak 1.5 EcoBoost 160 hp (8.4 l / 100 km). The acceleration capacity of 80 to 120 km / h (which is what we measure by simulating an overtaking maneuver) is very similar between these five gasoline models. Only the Mondeo is remarkable for being faster than the rest ( comparison chart ). One drawback (really the only one for my taste) is that it has very little force when driving very low laps. This can be seen clearly when climbing on a ramp in a garage or at a crossroads, if you leave a pass in second. In those situations, if the speed of the engine falls below 1400 rpm, it hardly has the strength to move the car. From that point on, he moves it with ease and has no blemish. The 150 horsepower diesel engine seems right for this car. It offers an acceleration that should be sufficient in most cases (according to our measurements has accelerated normal for its power), spends little fuel and its operation can be described as refined by vibrations or noise. It is not that he does not vibrate or sound anything, but rather that he does it in a very moderate way. Naturally, whoever seeks maximum silence and softness (especially in the city) will be more comfortable with the gasoline engine of the same power.This Diesel engine gives a better impression if it is linked to the DSG automatic gear shift than to the manual. The reason is in the form in which it delivers the power: it does not offer much acceleration below about 1500 rpm and above 4000 rpm it loses strength clearly. If it is chosen with automatic transmission, it is responsible for keeping the engine in its optimum operating mode, and therefore, the driver’s impression is that it is always full of power. If the manual gearbox is chosen, it is noted that the engine only has a lot of force between 1500 and 4000 rpm and, He petrol engines belong to the code family EA 211 and the diesel to the EA 288. All comply with the European standard of polluting emissions Euro 6; Diesels achieve this through the use of a catalytic reduction system for nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases (SCR).

In diesel engines, the particulate filter, the catalyst and the SCR system are together in the same module, attached to one of the sides of the engine. On the same side is the turbocharging system. The twin-turbo 2.0 TDI diesel engine has four cylinders, gives 239 hp maximum power and 500 Nm maximum torque. It is developed on the basis of 2.0 TDI single-turbo engines, but has a series of modifications to withstand the highest values   of power and torque. Among those modifications, Volkswagen highlights the reinforcement of the cylinder head, the pistons, the crankshaft and the crankshaft, as well as the bushings and bearings of the cylinders. Pressures up to 200 bar are reached in the combustion chamber. It uses piezo injectors, with 10-hole nozzles, which can inject the fuel mixture at 2500 bar of pressure.
