ABOUT VOLKSWAGON PASSAT

GENERAL INFORMATION

The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Passat ( information of the previous model) is on sale in Spain from the end of December 2014. The starting price is 25 995 euros ( all prices ) with saloon body and 27 685 euros with the family, called Variant ( all prices ). The Passat Variant test is in this other article . The version of access to the range has 125 hp gasoline engine and costs more than many rivals ( comparative list ), and some that cost the same, have more power. The diesel version 2.0 TDI 150 HP, available from € 29,035, is also more expensive than many alternatives ( listing ).The Volkswagen Passat model 2015 faces a number of large alternatives, almost all well achieved from different points of view. The Passat with the two 150-horsepower engines – petrol and diesel. Both respond well to the accelerator, consume little and are not noisy. The Diesel had the 6-speed automatic transmission (DSG), which we think is an excellent combination. The DSG automatic transmission offers outstanding performance and helps to make driving more pleasant by keeping the engine in the rev range where it works best without driver intervention. This change does everything well; It is very fast when it is needed and I think it works more smoothly in maneuvers than in the Passat of the previous generation. More information on driving impressions .

This generation of the Passat is built on the modular platform MQB (the same one that is used, for example, in Golf) and is up to 85 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The body of the sedan measures 4767 millimeters in length, 1832 mm in width and 1456 mm in height (the Passat Variant is 1 mm shorter). It is 2 mm shorter, 12 mm wider and 14 mm lower than the previous Passat Saloon. The wheelbase is 2791 mm (79 mm more). In the insurance comparator of km77.com we have calculated the price of an all-risk policy without a deductible for a 150 horsepower Passat Diesel with automatic gearshift. The policyholder is a 36-year-old married person who lives in Madrid, guards the car in a collective garage and travels 20,000 kilometers per year. He has been insured in another company ( Allianz ) for more informations about waterproof car covers 10 years and has never had any losses. With these conditions, the lowest price is offered by Direct Seguros for 417 euros with a quality policy of 5.39 points out of 10. For 496 euros, Verti offers a much higher quality policy (7.86 points).

INTERIOR IMPRESSION

The console is dominated by a medium-sized screen (6.5 inches, image). The name of the multimedia system that has this screen is «Composition Media» and, as a launch offer, it is standard even at the most basic equipment level. It responds well to the orders that are made with the fingers and the structure of its menus is simple. On both sides there is a series of physical buttons to access the different menus, such as the radio, telephone or navigation (if the system is installed). It is well protected from dirt because when pressed it does not stick the grease on your fingers (or at least it is not obvious) and has given me the impression that it does not tend to accumulate much dust (or is not as visible as in other casE.

INSTRUMENTATION

There are two types of instrumentation: the basic  composed of traditional indicators of needles and a small screen between them; and the optional one (called “Digital Cockpit”) composed of a 12.3-inch screen (resolution of 1440 x 540 pixels), the same size as the Audi TT , but with different technology to make it less expensive. The interior of the Volkswagen Passat 2015 is improved compared to the previous one. For example the touch of some materials is better. Now there are soft plastics in some places where they were previously hard and gave an impression of fragility (like the one that was just above the glove compartment lid). There are others that are still hard and of average quality, like the one between the front seats.

DRIVING POSITION

The driving position is good for the seats (at least with the “ergoComfort”), for the correct distribution of the controls and because the visibility is slightly better than usual. The windscreen pillar is not very thick and does not bother much in sharp turns; The same thing happens with the pillars of the final part of the bodywork. To facilitate the maneuvers, there is the possibility of mounting cameras. In total there may be up to four (in the lid of the gate, two in the mirrors and one in the grill); a computer combines the information of all to reproduce an aerial image of the car and what is around it. However, this option does not seem as necessary to me as in other cars because of the aforementioned relative good visibility in all directions. The three-zone climate control is standard for the Volkswagen Passat Advance and Sport . It works well because it is able to maintain the selected temperature even if the temperature changes outside are important. It can also heat the cabin in a reasonable time when the car has been out in the open for several hours in a row. This air conditioner lacks an automatic regulation of air recirculation. Thus, when driving behind a vehicle that expels a lot of smoke or we are in a very polluted environment, recirculation must be activated by hand so that no odors continue to enter.

DRIVING IMPRESSION

the Passat with the two 150 HP, gasoline and diesel engines. Between both versions there is 3190 euros of difference to equal equipment and 0.9 l / 100 km of consumption in favor of the first (according to official data, comparative tab ). With the consumption data approved and the price in force today when writing this article, it would be necessary to travel 463,000 km with Diesel to amortize its higher acquisition cost. In actual use, where there is greater difference in the consumption of one and another (besides being greater than the approved), it could be calculated that the distance to travel would be approximately half or less. The gasoline engine is 1395 cm³, with direct injection and supercharging by a turbocharger. It is an engine that sounds and vibrates little. In order to reduce consumption, it has a system that disconnects two cylinders when the torque request is low ( more information about this system ). That is, it is activated when the pressure on the accelerator pedal is slight (or null) and, in addition, it rotates at less than 3000 rpm (we have not been activated above that speed). It is practically impossible to detect when it happens to work from four to half cylinders and vice versa, you do not notice a jerk or a change of sound, but you can know because the screen of the instrument panel warns of them.

Whether due to this system, due to the (apparent) little resistance to the advance of this version of the Passat (it slows down if it stops accelerating on the flat) or the engine itself, the consumption of the Passat 1.4 TSI is low, especially when traveling at a more or less constant speed, without major changes of pace. In our comparative route by highway (which has a distance of 143.3 kilometers with large slopes and where we seek to reach a real average speed of 120 km / h) has spent 6.5 l / 100 km, practically the same as a Mazda6 SKYACTIVE -G 2.0 of 145 HP and less than a Peugeot 508 SW 1.6 THP 156 hp (7.1 l / 100 km), a Mercedes-Benz C 180 of 156 hp (7.2 l / 100 km) and a Ford MondeoSportbreak 1.5 EcoBoost 160 hp (8.4 l / 100 km). The acceleration capacity of 80 to 120 km / h (which is what we measure by simulating an overtaking maneuver) is very similar between these five gasoline models. Only the Mondeo is remarkable for being faster than the rest ( comparison chart ). One drawback (really the only one for my taste) is that it has very little force when driving very low laps. This can be seen clearly when climbing on a ramp in a garage or at a crossroads, if you leave a pass in second. In those situations, if the speed of the engine falls below 1400 rpm, it hardly has the strength to move the car. From that point on, he moves it with ease and has no blemish. This version of gasoline had manual gear change, six relations. The lever is handled smoothly although in the final phase of the route appears a point that offers more resistance, which makes it unpleasant to use.

The 150 horsepower diesel engine seems right for this car. It offers an acceleration that should be sufficient in most cases (according to our measurements has accelerated normal for its power), spends little fuel and its operation can be described as refined by vibrations or noise. It is not that he does not vibrate or sound anything, but rather that he does it in a very moderate way. Naturally, whoever seeks maximum silence and softness (especially in the city) will be more comfortable with the gasoline engine of the same power. This Diesel engine gives a better impression if it is linked to the DSG automatic gear shift than to the manual. The reason is in the form in which it delivers the power: it does not offer much acceleration below about 1500 rpm and above 4000 rpm it loses strength clearly. If it is chosen with automatic transmission, it is responsible for keeping the engine in its optimum operating mode, and therefore, the driver’s impression is that it is always full of power. If the manual gearbox is chosen, it is noted that the engine only has a lot of force between 1500 and 4000 rpm and, He petrol engines belong to the code family EA 211 and the diesel to the EA 288. All comply with the European standard of polluting emissions Euro 6; Diesels achieve this through the use of a catalytic reduction system for nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases (SCR).

In diesel engines, the particulate filter, the catalyst and the SCR system are together in the same module, attached to one of the sides of the engine. On the same side is the turbocharging system. Volkswagen says that with this design it is possible to shorten the length of the pipes that connect these modules to each other and to the engine, which results in lower response times and a reduction in weight. The twin-turbo 2.0 TDI diesel engine has four cylinders, gives 239 hp maximum power and 500 Nm maximum torque. It is developed on the basis of 2.0 TDI single-turbo engines, but has a series of modifications to withstand the highest values   of power and torque. Among those modifications, Volkswagen highlights the reinforcement of the cylinder head, the pistons, the crankshaft and the crankshaft, as well as the bushings and bearings of the cylinders. Pressures up to 200 bar are reached in the combustion chamber. It uses piezo injectors, with 10-hole nozzles, which can inject the fuel mixture at 2500 bar of pressure.
